Merch by Migrants

In our effort to empower migrants through creative expression, we guide them in harnessing the potential of the Canva application to craft distinctive designs. These designs are subsequently featured on shoes available for sale in our online store. A portion of the sales directly supports the artist responsible for creating the design.

In Morocco, a distressing practice occurs when migrants are arrested by the police—upon detention, their shoes are taken away. This seemingly cruel action is rooted in the hope of preventing the migrants from attempting to escape or embark on further journeys. By removing their shoes, law enforcement aims to limit their mobility and dissuade any potential attempts to flee detention. Additionally, it serves as a way to assert control and instill a sense of vulnerability, making it harder for individuals to resist or challenge their circumstances.

Having shoes taken away from migrants poses a significant health and safety risk. Proper footwear is essential for protecting their feet. Without shoes, migrants face increased vulnerability to injuries that can lead to severe health problems, especially where medical care is scarce. The lack of footwear also hinders mobility, making it difficult to navigate hazardous areas and respond to emergencies. In short, shoes are a basic necessity that ensures migrants’ well-being and safe travel, and taking them away adds to their already difficult journey.

This practice is seen as a form of control, coercion, and an attempt to dissuade migrants from pursuing their journey further. It is a controversial and often criticized method due to its infringement on the basic rights and dignity of individuals seeking refuge or a better life.
