Policy, Humanity, and the Right to Belong – A Conversation with Donatus Ozemhoya

In our ongoing effort to amplify the voices of those working tirelessly behind the scenes to advocate for undocumented migrants, Aidez Nous à Aider had the privilege of interviewing Donatus Ozemhoya — a policy advisor, migration advocate, and thought leader in the fight for human-centered policy reform.

In our conversation, Donatus explored the vital connection between policy development and lived experience, and how meaningful reform can only come when the people directly affected are included in shaping the conversation.

Drawing from his work in migration policy and advocacy, Donatus emphasized the importance of designing systems that reflect compassion, dignity, and reality — especially for undocumented migrants who are often excluded from formal processes yet form an essential part of our communities.

Throughout the interview, Donatus raised critical points about:

  • The limitations of current policy frameworks that criminalize or devalue migrants based on legal status;
  • The need for inclusive strategies that recognize the contributions of undocumented individuals;
  • And how policymakers and grassroots organizers can collaborate more effectively to bridge the gap between theory and lived experience.

His insights align with ANA’s values: that migration is not a crisis, but a human experience — one that requires thoughtful systems rooted in equity rather than fear.

By listening to leaders like Donatus, we are reminded that real change doesn’t start in a courtroom or at a border — it begins with people who are willing to challenge the status quo and build a future where no one is left behind.
