The Symbolism of the Mural Project
Our mural stands as a silhouette of a family wearing life jackets, a poignant representation of the migration crisis gripping our world. Each figure represents the thousands of individuals risking their lives at sea in pursuit of safety and opportunity, only to face perilous journeys and uncertain futures. The contrast between the protective gear and the shadowed figures symbolizes the grim reality that despite efforts to secure borders, many migrants continue to perish or go missing at sea.
As more resources are allocated to tighten border restrictions, the desperation of migrants only intensifies, leading to the emergence of even more dangerous migration routes. Our mural serves as a powerful reminder that heightened border control measures alone cannot stem the tide of migration; instead, they exacerbate the risks faced by migrants, pushing them towards perilous routes and increasing the likelihood of tragedy.

In addition to our mural project, we’ve launched the project ‘Merch by Migrants’, an innovative endeavor designed to shed light on the challenges faced by migrants through a symbolic representation of their journey. Through this initiative, we not only raise awareness but also empower migrants by teaching them how to create designs on online platforms, which are then transferred onto shoes and sold. A portion of the proceeds from each sale goes directly to the migrant artist, providing them with a source of income and recognition for their talents.
Each pair of shoes collected in this project serves as a tangible reminder of the human toll of migration. They represent the arduous trek across deserts and the perilous voyage across seas that so many migrants endure in search of safety and opportunity. Additionally, these shoes symbolize the harsh realities faced by migrants, as they also serve as a poignant reminder of how authorities often confiscate migrants’ belongings, including their shoes, upon arrest.
By combining art, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, Merch by Migrants not only prompts viewers to reflect on the challenges faced by migrants but also calls for greater compassion and solidarity towards those embarking on dangerous journeys in search of a better life. Through the sale of these shoes, we aim to not only raise awareness but also provide support and recognition to migrant artists, empowering them to share their stories and talents with the world.
